Tips for Better Security

In recent years, cybersecurity has become an increasingly important issue in the United States. With the rise of technology and the internet, the threat of cyber-attacks has grown exponentially, and it is now more important than ever to stay informed about current cybersecurity issues in our country. Computer Systems Plus wants to make sure you’re equipped no matter how big your business is.

Three of the most significant cybersecurity issues facing the United States is the threat of cyber-attacks from foreign governments, the growing threat of cybercrime, and the vulnerability of critical infrastructure to cyber-attacks. Attacks like these have the potential to cause significant damage to our American infrastructure and national security, and it is essential that the government takes steps to prevent them. The cybersecurity issue facing the majority of us is 100% cybercrime. Cybercriminals are becoming increasingly sophisticated in their methods, and they are targeting individuals and businesses alike. From identity theft to ransomware attacks, cybercrime is a serious threat that can cause significant financial and personal harm.

It is crucial for individuals and businesses to take steps to protect themselves from these threats, such as using strong passwords and keeping their software up to date. This also includes investing in new technologies and training programs to help protect small businesses from cyber threats. There is really so much we could say, but we actually want to help your business in practical ways rather than simply giving you information.

So, here are some tips that you can start applying TODAY:

1. Teach your team members the tricks

If an employee isn’t informed properly about what to look out for, they can make your business quite vulnerable to an attack. Most cases of data breaches are caused from the inside! Sometimes it’s on purpose, but most of the time it is caused carelessly. Like opening up a fraudulent email, losing a work laptop, or disclosing login credentials. To protect against threats from within it may be wise to think about having a cybersecurity training for all your employees. This can teach your staff the importance of strong passwords and what to look out for when receiving suspicious emails.

2. Deploy and Update Software

Make sure you have antivirus software that can protect all your devices from ransomware, viruses, and phishing scams. You don’t only need something that is going to protect you, but your business needs a system that will update frequently or make sure your managed service provider aka us (Computer Systems Plus) can notify you if there are any cyber threats. We can make sure you and your business stay safe from the latest cyber threats and patch any vulnerabilities.

3. Back Up those files!

If by some chance a cyberattack does happen your data could be deleted or compromised! If something like this does happen you want to make sure you have some sort of backup. At Computer Systems Plus we use a cloud-based system. A cloud-based system is a software program or application that’s stored, managed, and available through a cloud. In other words, if there is an attack and you lose data there is no need to worry because you can restore all your files from your backups. Sort of crazy if you think about it, but it is definitely the safest and most effective way to store data.

4. Passwords & Managing Them

I know you have heard us talk about this before, but we can not stress enough. Having a good secure password is so important. Typically, one should have at least 8-15 characters in length and contains a mix of upper and lower-case letters, numbers, and symbols. The more difficult it is to crack a password, the less likely someone is going to be able to crack it. Worried about remembering all your passwords? There are password managers that store all your passwords securely. Typically, you just need to remember a single PIN or master password to access the vault of login information.

5. Don’t forget about those Mobile Devices

Majority of us can pretty much do anything on our cell phones, but that also means that important and confidential information is also available through that device. Don’t forget to password-protect your mobile devices, install security apps, and encrypt data to stop criminals from stealing information while the phone is on public networks.
